Wow. This group, like so many others on LJ, not active in a while.
Well I hope some people still look at it.
I have wanted to do this for a while - start a Knoxville costuming guild.
Anyone interested please let me know.

So... I know there is a lot that can be said about the news this week and a lot that can't- that goes beyond words.

But right now... what I want to know is- who wore orange today?

Tell me about your gym
I'm a totally out of shape person, looking to get back in shape with the help of a personal trainer. I work downtown and live up in Gibbs, so I'm mostly deciding between the YMCA and National Fitness Center (it would be nice to have a pool). But any feedback would be welcome and appreciated.

Thank you!

Science Fiction magazines - FREE
Attention fellow Sci-fi geeks. FREE to any home: a stack of Starlog and related magazines from 1989-91, I worked at a bookstore and brought these home. They are without covers, but otherwise intact. Many have posters. Too cool to just recycle. If you like these, I am cleaning house and will dig out more in the coming months.
I also have many with covers that I will sell for a reasonable offer to save me the hassle of E-Bay.

Free Oriental Rug in Questionable condition
OK, I'm too tired and damp to figure out if Knoxville has a freecycle program.

I have a big oriental rug. Antique; appraisal was for over $1500 when it was passed to me from other relatives. Then I got it. My cat puked on it a bunch (I cleaned that up). It started getting dry rot on the edges. I had it rolled up in a corner of my (finished) basement, wondering what to do with it.

And then, my basement flooded.

The water was pretty clean, and the rug was not completely soaked. But I know I don't have the will or the time to Do Something with it.

Rather than toss it in a landfill, I thought I'd first put it up here. If you're into fixing things, or might do something Artsy with pieces of it, if you like damp rugs with cat hair, this rug's for you.

Reply here and we'll figure out how to get it to you.

MS walk this weekend: fundraising
I hope this post is okay, as it is Kville related, and for a good cause.

This weekend in World's Fair Park there is going to be a fundraising walk for MS. My sister is a sufferer of this disease, and I would like to keep her (and other people with MS) walking for the rest of her life, so I will be participating with her. If you can donate anything, even just $5, I would appreciate it a lot. I'm a long way from my fundraising goal.

Donate to me here if you would like to, or sign up to participate and raise money on your own. Either way, I just want to help this cause. Thanks.

Vet recommendations

So, I recently found out I will probably be inheriting a dog in the fall (my sister is moving out of state and can't take her dog with her.)  It's two years old, a small mixed breed dog that's pretty friendly, no major health problems (just to give some background to base your recommendations on).  I live in pretty far west area of Knoxville, close to Pellissippi Parkway.  So far, it looks like Cedar Bluff Animal Clinic is one of the closest vets and has a very good reputation.  Just thought I'd check in here for recommendations yes or no to that veterinarian, or any other thoughts you might have.  Thanks!!   I'm nervous but excited... will be a big change.

Physician Recommendations

Several questions:

First- I am looking to find a primary care doctor.  I am a single, mid-20s female, have been relatively healthy since moving here 5 years ago so never found a primary care doctor.  I have reasons I think I need to find one at this point though, get a general check-up to start with and to have someone in case of emergency etc.  Any recommendations?

Second- I would like to find a good dentist.  It's embarrassing, but it's been a similar length of time since I've been to one of those either.  I need someone patient with nervous, anxious people b/c I get that way at the dentist.  Also someone who won't push me to have a million cosmetic surgeries I can't afford and don't need (I've accepted my imperfect smile, haha)

Third- Ladies, any recommendation for a good OB/GYN?  Need a new one, for various reasons.  Someone experienced but gentle manner preferred.  Would prefer a woman for this one, but not required.

I know that's a tall order and there aren't many people who probably even read this community any more, but thought I'd give it a shot.  Thanks.

I am giving away a FREE love seat. No known damages, imperfections, or stains. I don't have the heart to just throw it away when somebody could use it, and it clearly will not fit in my Camry to be transfered to The Salvation Army or Goodwill. I just want this thing out of my kitchen!

Completely free, you'd just have to come transport it yourself. I live in the West Knoxville area, off Dutchtown Road.

Shoot me an email if you are interested, or have any questions or concerns.

Thanks :)

Hello....I was wondering if there were any other knoxvillians planning on attending Dragon*con 2010 in ATL this upcoming September? I would love to go and I'm ISO a rideshare deal. I'm willing to chip in on gas. If you are going and can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for local movers
I'm moving from a house in West Knoxville to one in Northish/Eastish Knox County next month. I have a quote from Two Men and a Truck and will be getting one from Gouffon later today. Anybody have suggestions about other companies? Any horror stories about companies that should be avoided?

And do I need to get someone separate to move my clothes washer and dryer? I haven't had to move those before.

Anyone know a good podiatrist in the area? I'm in west Knoxville, but I would go a little out of the way for a good one.

Where to donate stuff?
Is there a local charity or charity shop that takes craft supplies? I have a bunch of yarn, in varying amounts and quality, that I'd like to find a new home for. I know there's a Goodwill in New Jersey that takes it, but that's a bit far...

Also, anyone know of a charity that accepts old cloth items to sell for rag (they get a certain amount of money per pound or ton when they sell it)? I have clothes and sheets not suitable for resale and old hand-made curtains that no-one would pay money for.

I don't want these things to end up in a landfill, but have no clue where to take them!

So, question for all of you
Anyone know of any dress dyeing services in Knoxville that would dye a polyester dress? I am needing it black and I have no idea how to get it done on my own without severe amounts of work on my part that I cannot do in a on my own fashion.

ZOMG It's A Hair Question!!!!111
I kind of hate myself for caring about this so much I have to ask a question, but here goes:

I've been growing my hair out for a few years now, and it's getting to the point where it is becoming unmanageable. In the past, I've usually gone to the chain places (America's cuts, Great Clips, etc). They do decent jobs for what I want, which is a hairstyle that I basically just need to wash and go.

I've been thinking for some time now that I should maybe try going to an actual salon and get myself a big girl haircut. Anyone have a favorite place? Why? Will I be paying $50 for something I can get at TN School of Beauty for $15?

I need some recommendations, please.
